We all know that you can’t run a business on your own. It’s impossible to be a master of all trades, so sometimes you need to find a great team of professionals to help you. Throughout this series, I’m going to feature some awesome fellow bosses who can help you in your business – from accounting to advertising, marketing to virtual assistants, business coaches to graphic designers, and everything in between.
This month, I spoke to Carma Levene from Carma The Social Chameleon.
What’s your business and what do you offer your clients?
Social Media Strategy, Social Media Advertising, Social Media Training & Workshops
How did you get into your industry?
I first started a Facebook page while I was in the hospitality industry, for a pub I was running and I quickly saw how effective it could be in getting attention to your business in a very cost-effective way. Plus I really enjoyed the social aspect of it – so I learned everything I could and got myself an internship with Perth’s first social-only agency, and the rest is history…
What made you start your own business?
I was made redundant and I knew I could use my skills and experience to support myself – rather than an agency making money from selling my skills and experience as a service.
What’s your most popular service/product and which one is your favourite?
The service I perform the most is private training. Most people want a better understanding of Social Media or Social Advertising.
My favourite…that’s tough…I love making difference to the business bottom line – so I really like Social Advertising. But there’s something so rewarding about training too. I can’t decide.
Do you get asked any really common questions in your business?
People always ask me how much they need to spend on Social Advertising…which is impossible to answer without doing some research on their specific audience, industry and even what levels of traffic and data they already have at their disposal.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I was never sure. I’ve wanted to be a vet, a lawyer, a journalist, and a jazz singer…I guess I thought once I’d grown up I’d have it figured out.
How do you stay organised in your business? Any top tips for fellow bosses?
Don’t ask me – I live in a state of chaos! If you need to time yourself use an app like Toggl, if you are working on a project with a team use a CRM like Asana. Get an accountant. Put money away for your tax bill. Don’t let yourself become a hermit.
Do you have any habits that you think contribute to your success?
I think I’m a natural problem solver. I like to think about ways to fix things, or work around them, flip them on their heads…I think this is an underrated skill (or is it a personality trait?)
What’s the one thing you wished people knew about what you do?
That’s it’s not just putting up a couple of posts on Facebook.
What’s your favourite thing to do when you aren’t working?
Does drinking wine count as a thing? Also – what do you mean when I’m not working?
Any upcoming events or things you want to share with us?
Nothing I can think of…I’ll be finishing my current contract in May so I might have some time to put on a few workshops. Stay tuned of you’re into that kind of thing.
