We all know that you can’t run a business on your own.
It’s impossible to be a master of all trades, so sometimes you need to find a great team of professionals to help you.
Throughout this series, I’m going to feature some awesome fellow bosses who can help you in your business – from accounting to advertising, marketing to virtual assistants, business coaches to graphic designers, and everything in between.
This month, I spoke to Mackayla Paul from Social Stylings®.
What’s your business and what do you offer your clients?
At the moment I’m taking a short break from client work, but as a business owner, I am an Instagram Marketing Consultant specialising in assisting Fashion and Beauty brands to master content marketing as well as increasing sales or bookings through organic marketing and paid advertising methods.
How did you get into your industry/niche?
I’ve always been fascinated by the Fashion Industry, and as I have a varied background including working in a Hairdressing Salon for a time it made complete sense to me to have my niche in the Digital Marketing space be Fashion/Beauty brands.
What made you start your own business?
My father always told me “If you want to really make money, you need to work for yourself”. Over the years I’ve found that money doesn’t motivate me, but that encouragement to take risks and go out on my own is essentially what helped me to make that leap.
What’s your most popular service/product and which one is your favourite?
Previously, my favourite service to offer is Instagram Audits. I feel as though when we are knee-deep in the running of our businesses we miss out on things like new Instagram updates and we tend to overlook the details of our content and profile set-up that can actually be the difference between generating sales and bookings, and not. My clients always walk away from those sessions with excitement and a new lease on Instagram Marketing.
Do you get asked any really common questions in your business?
The most common I’d say is ‘What’s the deal with Instagram Hashtags’ and also, ‘How does the Instagram Algorithm work’.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
When I was little I was a typical little princess – I loved Barbie dolls, playing dress up and wearing fairy wings. When I look back I notice times when my entrepreneurial spirit was showing amongst all the glitter and frou frou… for example, I would often set up ‘Shopping Malls’ and have each of my Barbie dolls running a different type of business.
How do you stay organised in your business? Any top tips for fellow bosses?
For the longest time i’ve been a paper and pen person (still am, I love the ‘Best Self Journal’) but more recently I’ve started using Trello for content marketing planning and I am loving it.
Do you have any habits that you think contribute to your success?
I think persistence is key for anyone who wants to be successful. I’ve gone through a lot in my career that probably would have made others stop in their tracks; including a stalker who found me through my business, two well-known marketers infringing on my trademark which required lawyers, and a messy relationship breakup in the middle. Awful right? To persist through these challenges I didn’t stuff my feelings down (this is the important part) instead I took breaks from the business where I could and re-evaluated to make sure I was still doing what made me happy along the way.
What’s the one thing you wished people knew about what you do?
I wish people understood that although I am an Instagram Marketing Specialist, I don’t spend all of my time on Instagram. I’m a Digital Marketer through and through and because of that have varied knowledge that helps me to give my clients the best results possible.
What’s your favourite thing to do when you aren’t working?
My favourite thing to do when I am not working is to either visit my favourite fashion boutique (a client of mine too!) @palomabrisbane or create some watercolour paintings.
Any upcoming events or things you want to share with us?
